If you love beautiful scenery, hiking or mountain biking in the gorgeous Sierra Nevada mountains along the Pacific Crest Trail or the many other nearby meandering paths, then Donner Summit might just be the place for you in the Fall.
Why come here and vacation in the Fall?
You basically get the place to yourself. Donner Summit, Truckee, Soda Springs, Serene Lakes vacation rentals are cheaper and much more available. There’s less traffic coming and going from the San Francisco Bay area or Sacramento. Nearby Fall events in Reno, Lake Tahoe, Squaw Valley, Truckee are quite fun and great people watching. There’s anything from rib fests, beer fests, parades, mountain bike races, running races, street vibrations (a motorcycle superfest), gorgeous Cris Kraft gatherings, and more. There’s something for everyone.
Last weekend I hiked/ran the trail from Sugar Bowl to Squaw Valley Ski Resort and only saw 3 other people the whole 16 mile trip. There are plenty of vacant public piers to relax on or fish from on Donner Lake. There’s no lines at the store, and when you’re out enjoying nature, you can hear the sounds of high flying hawks and osprey, geese, and all the happy chirping smaller birds gathering food for winter.
The birch and aspens are starting to change color to their brilliant golden mustard color – great for photography and amazing mountain vistas.
What’s new on the Summit?
Sugar Bowl ski resort has done a fantastic job with the dinner deck overlooking Lake Mary. It’s very nicely landscaped, reasonable prices and amazing views of the lake and mountains. They have also put in a beautiful new trail that weaves through the forest from Lake Mary to the Sugar Bowl Village. My daily run goes from Donner Ski Ranch across the street to Lake Mary, along the new trail, and then through the village and along the railroad track dirt road and back up to the summit – it’s an inspiring finish to the run – seeing the red, white and blue flag flying in the wind at the Sugar Bowl Academy … and the PCT across the street. Unfortunately there’s no more Lake Mary Dinners for the season, so book your Donner Summit vacation rentals early for next summer.
